got half way through the wiki. it's pretty confusing to read. it seems way more involved then just changing 3 files. if it's only three he made it seem really confusing. not at all written for someone like me that doesn't understand the language. like "open an ssh window." huh? where? in my home? why do i need to click a link to go to some other page to apparently do the first three steps. just copy and paste the steps. And it says, "copy (cp) the files to the location of the USB drive" but the writer never mentioned using a usb drive before that sentence so where is he talking about? i'd love to do it but i'll wait for someone to make some simple gui interface or much simpler instructions.

ya that is rediculous! sounds very hard to do if you can even figure out the instructions.

just go to youtube and look up palm pre root

i think you're missing the point. if you have to go somewhere other then the original article it's not easy. if all you say is "youtube and look up palm pre root" that's not enough detail for someone that hasn't done it already. For example i did look up "palm pre root" on you tube and it doesn't show you how to change the logo. it shows you howt to get root access.

if it's only three file's you'd think you could just include a rar of the three modified files and then just drag and drop them into the appropriate folder. i think clearly it's a little more involved. regardless. instructions need to be a bit clearer for the average person. And surely more clear then that wiki. That's all.

I think Phil is saying after you ROOT your pre, it's a matter of copying 3 files, which essentially all that wiki is telling you to do. All you're doing is locating the background files for the phone dialer, and changing it to whatever you want. It's getting into the phone dialers folder that is the hard(er) part.

i understand. i'm sure that's true. i mentioned the three files thing just cause they made it seem easy. as though all it was was going and changing three files. period. but considering the fact that a future update could easily or accidently copy all those original files back i'm going to hold off on this for a while. The black ones look cool. Why they chose green i've no idea. i hate green!

i stumbled across this. and it's looks to be quite a good tutorial of how to "root" a pre. thought someone may benefit.

So everything worked great...took a while...but worked great...but I have one problem that I could not figure out how to get past. I have the theme changed, but was attempting to change the "Enter Number or Name" as shown at the end of the tutorial. As there were not specific instructions, I simply tried to copy the dialpad.css file to the internal folder, then I edited the css accordingly. However, when I tried to copy the css file back to the Pre, I was told that it was read only and I did not have have permission to over-write it with the newly edited file.

Anyone know how to change the permission or overwrite the file?

Edit on last post: It says "Read only file system"..

There is a much EASIER way. download Preware onto your palm pre phone. Open the PreWare app and browse through hundreds of different themes for your pre. You can change everything---boot screen, phone dial pad, icons, just everything. Its so easy and fun to do. I am not "hi tech" at all . I was just tired of such a plain palm pre. PreWare app lets you make your pre unique.
