Interview with the developers from Self Aware Games who brought us Card Ace and Word Ace

We had a chance to speak with Seppo over at Self Aware Games, who produced two very exciting apps in the WebOS App Catalog. Word Ace, which was released very early on in the App Catalog, is easily the best game out due to its unique game play, which combines a Texas Hold'em style card game with letters needed to form words and allowing a multiplayer functionality that includes chat capabilities during gameplay. Then while we were all eagerly awaiting paid apps to hit the catalog, the day finally came, and to our surprise so did one stand out app that was actually free, 'Card Ace'. Card Ace takes some of the same concepts of Word Ace and allows you to actually play Texas Hold'em with other players online. The unique app puts you on a table with other players and allows you to place bets, call, or fold the current hand. It plays just like you would expect Texas Hold'em to play but one of the cool things is you can actually chat with the other players at the table. Definitely an exciting feature to see in a game this early on in WebOS Development. We also discussed in depth, Self Aware's experience with WebOS and so far it sounds like a good one and looks like they will continue to develop for WebOS!

Check out the full interview after the break!

Keen Studios connecting us to our friends with multiplayer WebOS games.

We spoke to Jordan Gensler, founder of Keen Studios, who seems to be pretty excited to develop for Web OS. They started with Checkers and had so much fun with it are going to be developing a number of games. Checkers Pro, Wellow, and Wellow Bounce Room. Wellow and Wellow Bounce Room is their latest project but they haven't released any details about it just yet, but said they will have new information about the game coming in about a week. You can find out details about it if you check out Keen Studios and click the 'applications' link.

Keen Studios has already submitted Checkers Pro into the App Catalog and are waiting with us to see when it comes out so we can all purchase it. Checkers Pro is similar to the free version of checkers already in the App Catalog, but with a few additional features. There are additional settings and game play modes that offer a variety of different ways to play or practice Checkers. It will be available in the App Catalog as soon as Palm puts paid apps in the catalog. Checkers Pro will run you the  low price of $0.99 so make sure you get it as soon as it is available!

Some of the webOS Games currently in development

Who dares to say the Palm Pre is not capable of gaming? I'll admit, the current 5 games on the App Catalog is fun, but not something most users would spend their money on. In Palm's defense, the Mojo Framework is still sorta in Beta, so intense 3D and Arcade game development will have to wait until Palm releases the OpenGL Graphics Framework. Even so, simple games like a puzzle, board games, and even simple arcade games are very possible with the current API from the SDK

Speaking of games, we're seeing a plenty of game development behind the Palm Developer Forum. To list a few:

Wobble Words: I think this is the best looking webOS game so far, in terms of the user interface. The game can be described as "part Boggle, part Scrabble and part Tetris". Game play also makes use of the Accelerometer, we'll see how that goes. Hoping for something new.

We'll get a copy of the game when it's ready for beta from the developer, Dave Balmer, so stay tune for a review or a more in-depth look at the game.

Great looking game, can't wait to test it out.
